How is Ooma AirDial designed?

Ooma AirDial is a single box, multi-application solution for a wide range of critical alarm, safety, building access and fax devices.

AirDial features a rugged, industrial design that can be placed in just about any interior building. AirDial features heat-sink and optimal ventilation which allows fan-less cooling.

Installation is as simple as mounting the unit on a wall or placing on a flat surface. Performance is not degraded either way you choose to deploy AirDial.

AirDial’s LCD display always shows signal strength, WAN status, battery power and line activity.

How many lines does each box support?

Each Ooma AirDial device supports four FXS ports. Each line allows configuration for phone number, name (ex., elevator #1 call box), service address, forwarding options, service address and calling mode.

Can I port existing numbers over?

Accepted Answer

Yes, telephone number transfers (porting) can be initiated by contacting the Ooma Customer Support Team or making the port request through the online Remote Device Management portal.

Do I bring my own data plan?

Yes, but service reliability might not be assured as it might not meet the regulatory MFVN compliance requirements. Also, if anyone wants to BYOS then the data plan should support minimum 2GB/month and ideally unlimited data, since consumption is based on usage. We have seen some panels placing calls ever 30 seconds which results in several 1000s of calls per month.

What if there’s no coverage, can it use other carriers (BYO-SIM)?

Yes, Ooma AirDial will work with any LTE operator in North America. In the event of coverage issues, Ooma can also provide resolutions, ranging from alternate antennas, external antennas and alternate carrier options.

How does failover work between the wired WAN and wireless LTE?

With Ooma AirDial, LTE is always attached and connected, so if Ooma AirDial is also connected on Ethernet WAN then Ethernet is used as primary interface for all data traffic, and if the ethernet link is lost, then the device fails over to LTE. However, if the ethernet is not connected then LTE is used for all data traffic.

How do I set Ooma AirDial up?

Select Activate Device from the upper-right part of the device list screen.
Select phone numbers and choose the settings for all the lines that you'd like to enable on the AirDial device.

How does Ooma AirDial provide secure communications over the Internet?

Ooma AirDial routes all communications over network paths that are proactively managed and maintained by MFVN-compliant providers. Ooma partners closely with our cellular providers to create a direct Ethernet connection to the Ooma MFVN network in a shared data center.

From Ooma’s data center, traffic is passed to an MFVN-compliant gateway provider, again with a direct hardwired connection in a shared data center. Our gateway partner then terminates the call to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).

This set of direct connections is designed so that Ooma AirDial communications will not cross the public internet. This is a critical feature of the Ooma AirDial architecture that is different from many VoIP solutions. In many competing solutions, traffic is handed off to the public internet for one or more legs of the path.
